Green waste is the domestic garden waste collected by your local council. It is composted and sold to farmers and other users as a soil amendment and is a sustainable resource that is of great benefit to society.

However recently there have been several reports that some of this green waste is potentially contaminated with metal and other domestic waste. This could damage the land where it is used and potentially harm the livestock grazing there. This contamination also has an impact on our ability to identify sites of archaeological interest because the metal contamination interferes with geophysical investigations.

This project, run by Newcastle University, History Classics and Archaeology (HCA) and Civil Engineering and Geosciences (CEG), will collect information on the scale and distribution of potential green waste contamination by enabling metal detectorists, archaeologists and other countryside users to record the level of metal and other domestic waste contamination found on the land during their activities, although of course it is open to all interested countryside users.

This app is not designed for the recording of archaeological finds. If you have any archaeological finds, you should report it to the Portable Antiquities Scheme - https://finds.org.uk/ .
